Our buddies invited us to participate in their culminating science activity for their solids, liquids, and gasses unit. The kiddos made 'purple, fizzy cows' using vanilla ice cream (solid), grape soda (liquid)/bubbles from the soda (gas). Not only did the kids learn something new, they also enjoyed a tasty treat!</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><span style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7o_DDZxxlYVISn0l3Y5flpBMZZYKIe6f5yVVV3VItjumuyd_7qz5aYldAZA2_ETirx8ASlOmbf4tu4UH8aoOk3eJEKeVFkAfsGmAxy3rKze2WO_fAwUFae5H_fwVNr-M7psmKb3iriW8/s640/blogger-image-2079134149.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; Here is a recap of our class happenings and objectives.<div><br></div><div>Thanksgiving Activities</div><div>The week of Thanksgiving, we participated in Thanksgiving themed centers.</div><div><br></div><div>We learned about how Thanksgiving today is different from the first Thanksgiving. For example, the Pilgrims and Native Americans were not able to just go to the grocery store when they needed food. To bring this idea to life, we put heavy cream into containers and shook them until it became butter. We then spread the butter on crackers. <div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhz40wgZaT2o4uqI0ouQUYmjpPOh5Q9wUQtfwr1Dg7c8zlJmMj0DX9JrDw7coqnkzv6PMGXMBz931MpB_gbEffc8iyZQ2A5fs9MJCDHtl0rjwjfrL4w5aWQ5o2bfG__KYOcpLPkdd1PttE/s640/blogger-image--1681258459.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhz40wgZaT2o4uqI0ouQUYmjpPOh5Q9wUQtfwr1Dg7c8zlJmMj0DX9JrDw7coqnkzv6PMGXMBz931MpB_gbEffc8iyZQ2A5fs9MJCDHtl0rjwjfrL4w5aWQ5o2bfG__KYOcpLPkdd1PttE/s640/blogger-image--1681258459.jpg"></a><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhz40wgZaT2o4uqI0ouQUYmjpPOh5Q9wUQtfwr1Dg7c8zlJmMj0DX9JrDw7coqnkzv6PMGXMBz931MpB_gbEffc8iyZQ2A5fs9MJCDHtl0rjwjfrL4w5aWQ5o2bfG__KYOcpLPkdd1PttE/s640/blogger-image--1681258459.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCH5uWBmqu6Euy-KaQ4fG9XJdcQ5caY8M-6CLs5uLR3bUyXHhfuYwgWYGb7qvkPKJBN3n_VHcq8b5QAJCxdsNRjd02zbBTvBzuGnn8RRvPzMoaxAqtfAREjc8Cuo9qSA5mnF5M8_4LhNE/s640/blogger-image-2062675495.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCH5uWBmqu6Euy-KaQ4fG9XJdcQ5caY8M-6CLs5uLR3bUyXHhfuYwgWYGb7qvkPKJBN3n_VHcq8b5QAJCxdsNRjd02zbBTvBzuGnn8RRvPzMoaxAqtfAREjc8Cuo9qSA5mnF5M8_4LhNE/s640/blogger-image-2062675495.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFvtiBxbCa33cxgMRU1NCniV9t-Dm4rzOa55429xxLXMGGbjZgvpENmfj6Hl6MR9q5inhwlwPnRCMediujEWRP13eXhVJEOqNT97wm6myiK2NlejR_qGem3CsaxzYsASfYIf4TDUNSwwg/s640/blogger-image-97501451.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFvtiBxbCa33cxgMRU1NCniV9t-Dm4rzOa55429xxLXMGGbjZgvpENmfj6Hl6MR9q5inhwlwPnRCMediujEWRP13eXhVJEOqNT97wm6myiK2NlejR_qGem3CsaxzYsASfYIf4TDUNSwwg/s640/blogger-image-97501451.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">We also made turkey headbands and wrote the sight words we knew on the feathers.</div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhutzTAVp-fuJoFLP-iRZ7VpNECLtDm8yjNupM-7a6jenSxvDbDAOBXBpWn0uejzU3P4-KQ6HrqI5kqy2IJr9nCFNQPl9CCKhbzMb5hd-hDXIkEQerhFS2c9iqc2ByaQIxUz2f2RLqEagQ/s640/blogger-image--1247987118.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhutzTAVp-fuJoFLP-iRZ7VpNECLtDm8yjNupM-7a6jenSxvDbDAOBXBpWn0uejzU3P4-KQ6HrqI5kqy2IJr9nCFNQPl9CCKhbzMb5hd-hDXIkEQerhFS2c9iqc2ByaQIxUz2f2RLqEagQ/s640/blogger-image--1247987118.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">And now on to what we've been working on for the past few weeks</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Math</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">-identifying and describing 2D shapes (square, rectangle, triangle, circle, and hexagon). The emphasis has been on describing the shapes in regards to the number of vertices, and the number and length of their sides. For example, a rectangle has 4 vertices and 4 sides. Two of the sides are long and two of the sides are short.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">-identifying and describing 3D shapes (cube, cone, sphere, and a cylinder).</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Again, the emphasis has been on describing the shapes using vocabulary such as number of vertices, number and shape of faces, and the number of edges. For example, a cone has one vertice, 1 face shaped like a circle, and 1 curved edge. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">To support this objective at home, encourage your kiddo to identify 3D shapes at home. For example, the salt shaker is the shape of a cylinder. Cylinders have 0 vertices, 2 faces shaped like circles, and 2 curved edges. The soccer ball is shaped like a sphere. Spheres have 0 vertices, 0 faces, and 0 edges. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Language Arts</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">-In writing we have introduced opinion pattern books. For example, I like kittens because they are soft. I like turtles because they have a shell. The students understand that in order to state an opinion, you must have the word because in your statement. As always, we continue to work on our writing conventions such as writing most letters correctly, using a capital letter at the beginning of the sentence, using mostly lowercase letters, sounding out unknown words, using sight words/spelling them correctly, spacing between words, and have a punctuation mark at the end of each sentence. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">-In reading, we continue to work on retelling a story in order. We have introduced vocabulary such as character and setting for the kiddos to use when retelling the story. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">-We also continue to work on our sight word mastery as the more words you know, the more books they can read</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">-We also continue to work on using one to one correspondence while reading, sounding out unknown words, and using picture clues to determine unknown words. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">To support these objectives at home, have your child read to you everyday day. Let them show you how smart they are by sounding out a word a recipe. Go to the library and choose a fun holiday book. Let your child identify all the sight words in the book. </div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><font color="#ff0000"><u><br></u></font></div><br></div>Mrs. McGarryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01567636348079410926noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4191259904538953331.post-19479748661699254532014-11-14T11:42:00.001-08:002014-11-17T08:07:32.585-08:00Almost halfway through the second quarter....Can you believe we are almost halfway through the second quarter? It feels like just yesterday, the kiddos were coming in for the first day of school! We have been working hard all quarter to master our 2nd quarter goals and I hope you have seen evidence of all of their learning at home:-)<div><br></div><div>Language Arts</div><div>Reading</div><div>This week in reading, we have been focusing on</div><div>-sight word identification</div><div>A, and, can, is, I, it, see, the, this, like, to play</div><div>The kiddos know that the more sight words they know, the more books they will be able to read. Encourage your little guy or gal to see how many sight words they can identify in a day. See if they can identify 5 sight words and reward them when they do. Ask your child to show you the gestures for the sight words. The gestures are important,as "muscle memory" is vital to sight word mastery. </div><div>-identifying all the sounds in CVC words (consonant, vowel, consonant words such as cat, log, pig, etc...) </div><div>Challenge your kiddo to see how many CVC words they can write! </div><div>We continue to work on:</div><div>-asking and answering questions about fiction and nonfiction text</div><div>After reading a fiction story at home (you can use the book sent home with their homework), Ask,your child to tell you about it. Who was in the story? Where did it happen? What happened? </div><div>If you are reading non-fiction, ask your child to share with you 2 interesting facts,they learned from the story. </div><div>-identifying the number of syllables, or parts in words</div><div>Have your child show you the 2 ways we can identify the number of syllables in a word (clapping or robot method)</div><div><br></div><div>Writing</div><div>We continue to work on the genre of pattern books. Today, we had an author's celebration, where the kiddos got to share the pattern books they created this week with their friends. Then ask them how to figure out what number comes next. For example, the number sixteen. It has the word teen, so it starts with a 1, then there is the number 6 in the word sixteen. So, the number sixteen must be written as 16. Lastly, ask your kiddo about the tricky teen numbers like eleven and twelve</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">-using a tens frame to represent numbers in the teens. For example, the number 16 would be represented as follows:</div>XXXXX</div><div>XXXXX XXXXXX</div><div> 10 6</div><div>We continue to work on:</div><div>-counting by ones to 40 and counting by tens to 40.</div><div><br></div><div>Just an FYI about end of the quarter expectations:</div><div>We have about a month until the end of the quarter. To be considered on grade level in reading, your child should be able to...</div><div>-read a level B book</div><div>That is, read a book with an AB pattern. For example, I like grapes. They are sweet. I like pizza. It is cheesy. </div><div>-Identify ALL of the sight words on the homework sheet</div><div>The sight words in the level B books correlate to the list you have been given for homework.</div><div>-Demonstrate at least 5 out of the 6 reading behaviors listed in your child's homework</div><div>-Be able to identify identify all the sounds in 20 words in a minute (phoneme segmentation). Practice for this can also be found in your child's homework.</div><div>Please know we are working everyday with your child on these objectives to make sure they are on grade level. Any support and/or practice you can do at home is very much appreciated. </div><div>NOTE: The end of the quarter reading assessment will NOT be completed by your child's teacher. Instead, it will be completed by a first grade teacher. Until then, I will be providing opportunities for your child to get to know the teacher who will be completing their assessment so they will feel comfortable when this person is assessing them. </div><div>Please feel free to email me with any concerns and/or questions. </div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div>Mrs. McGarryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01567636348079410926noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4191259904538953331.post-51492609445823956942014-11-04T11:19:00.001-08:002014-11-04T17:15:20.632-08:00What's Going On In Room 210?<u>Language Arts</u><br />
<div>
In reading, we have been working on </div>
<div>
-asking and answering questions in a story. In fiction text, that means being able to answer questions such as who is the story about? Where does the story happen? What happens at the beginning of the story? What happens at the end? In non-fiction text, that would look like asking a question you want to know before you start reading, and seeing if the question is answered in the text. If it isn't, a student should be able to tell a fact they learned about the topic of the text. For example, I didn't find out if panda bears can run fast, but I did find out they eat bamboo for up to 12 hours a day.<br />
You can support this objective at home by talking and asking questions about what you are reading each night.<br />
-breaking apart words into parts, or syllables, then using the syllables to blend into a word<br />
For example, alligator has 4 syllables and tractor has 2 syllables. There are many ways to determine how many syllables there are in a word, but the most common way is to clap it out (/al/ /li/ /ga/ /tor/) or use 'robot talk' (/tra/ /tor/). When blending syllables into words, we would say /mo/ /vie/. What word would I made if I put those syllables together (movie)? You can support this at home by making a game out of breaking words into syllables and blending them back together. For example, how many syllables does the word mommy have in it? /mo/ /mmy/ (2). Or say what word would I make if I put these syllables together? /da/ pause /ddy/. That's right, Daddy!</div>
<div>
<br />
In writing, <br />
we have moved on from</div>
<div>
-Thinking and Writing like a scientist. In this genre, we picked objects from nature and wrote about them according to their physical properties. For example, "This is a gem. It is purple. It is smooth. It is sparkly." </div>
<div>
This week, we have introduced the genre of pattern books. That is, books that start the same way on each page. For example, "I can swim. I can run. I can slide." </div>
<div>
In each genre, we continue to focus on </div>
<div>
-starting each sentence with a capital letter</div>
<div>
-using spaces between words</div>
<div>
-sounding out most sounds in unknown words<br />
-using a period at the end of each sentence<br />
-proper letter formation </div>
<div>
-using sight words in our writing</div>
<div>
*as of today, the sight words we have learned are: a, is, I, see, the, this, and, it, can<br />
Ask your child to show you the gestures for these words. You can practice more words using the sight word list from your child's November homework.</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
<u>In math, we have been working on:</u></div>
<div>
-adding one more to a group of numbers</div>
<div>
-taking away one less to a group of numbers<br />
the goal is to further solidify the understanding of number sense to where the kiddos would not have to recount. For example, if I had a group of 5 and added one more ( X X X X X X)<br />
I would NOT want a child to recount and say one, two, three, four, five, six, but instead count on from 5 and say 6 (although this does take time). The same is intended if we take away a number from a group (X X X X X take away 1). I would want a child to mark out one of the Xs and say 5 take away 1 less is 4. <br />
Do you feel like your child has a firm understanding of number sense through 10? Trying extending their learning doing this same skill with a number in the teens, or a number in the 30's.</div>
<div>
-comparing groups and numbers to determine which is more, less, and equal<br />
At the beginning of the year, we focused on comparing groups of numbers. However, now, we are focusing on comparing the numbers themselves. For example, which is more? 4 or 9? Which is less? are they equal? In addition, we are proving their responses (9 is more than 4, 4 is less than 9, they are not equal) by drawing pictures to represent their responses. <br />
You can support this objective at home and/or extend your child's learning by comparing number sin the teens.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<u>Early Release Reminder</u></div>
<div>
Mark your calendars....This Friday, November 7th is an early release day</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<u>Book Fair Information</u></div>
<div>
Our book fair will be up and running starting tomorrow. Our class will have a preview day, where they can browse the books and write down what they want, as well as a day to purchase books. The preview date and book purchase date are forthcoming. I will email with them ASAP. </div>
<div>

So, here's a snapshot of what we have been up to in the classroom.<br />
<br />
<u>In Math, we continue to work on...</u><br />
-using one-to-one correspondence (touch counting) to count up to 10 objects in a line or objects that are scattered<br />
-represent numbers with groups of objects <br />
-determining if 2 groups of objects are more than, less, or equal<br />
to each other<br />
-using a tens frame to represent a numbers 1-10<br />
<br />
This week, we are learning how to use a 5-group to represent numbers 6-10 and count on from 5. For example, if we are representing the number 7, we would represent it the following way:<br />
<br />
XXXXX XX<br />
5- group <br />
<br />
Then, instead of counting and starting from 1, we would use the 5 group to count on from 5 and say, "5, 6, 7". <br />
<br />
<u>In reading, we continue to work on....</u><br />
-using/understanding reading behaviors such as reading top to bottom, left to right, and page to page to read and enjoy stories<br />
-using our understanding of print concepts (differentiating between a letter and a word, the first/last letter f a word) to read and enjoy stories<br />
-Using the Letterland program to identifying the following uppercase/lowercase letters a, c, d, i, h, o, g, s, t, m, p, and 1 and their sounds<br />
-"reading the illustrations" of a story<br />
That it, looking at the illustrations of a story closely and creating words to match the illustrations. <br />
-recognizing the sight words "I", "see" and "the"<br />
Ask your kiddo for the gestures<br />
<br />
<u>In writing, we continue to work on</u><br />
-using a combination of drawing, writing, and dictating to convey an idea or thought<br />
-making sure the illustration that is drawn supports/matches the idea or thought shared<br />
-labeling the picture with at least beginning sounds<br />
-stringing along letters to represent a sentence that matches the illustration<br />
<br />
<u>Apple Day</u><br />
We will be having Apple Day, Wednesday, September 24th. We will spend the day participating in apple themed, curriculum based activities. However, we will need a something from YOU to help make the day extra special. And that item is....you guessed it....APPLES!! Red apples, yellow apples, and green apples are all needed. So, if you are out at the grocery store this weekend and see a few (or a bag), please think about buying some for our classroom:-)<br />
<br />
<u>Field Trip</u><br />
Mr. Meares, our instructional assistant has been working diligently to collect and receipt the signed field trip forms and payments. If you haven't signed/returned the forms/payment, don't worry! You have next week to turn in the forms. However, please turn them in BEFORE track out, as we are going on our field trip the day after we return, October 21st. <br />
<u></u><br />
<u>Fall Festival</u> <br />
Our Fall Festival is Friday, October 26th. It is one of the most fun (in my opinion) fundraisers that our PTA during the year. There will be face painting, bounce house, food, and more! And speaking of more, there will also be an auction where each class will sell a themed basket. Our theme, as you probably know is "Baby Love". Thank you to everyone who has donated items including Candice Maher and Liza Kiger! <br />
<br />
<u>Things to keep an eye out for...</u><br />
-Quarter 1 report cards coming home next Friday<br />
-Sign Up form for Quarter 1 conferences<br />
-volunteer opportunities<br />
-Letterland Dress Up Day information<br />

Even more, it creates a positive connection with students in older grades:-)<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZ8X4gGOV46auzD6O7BcyXd5f7xDj9AsyMtALK3IcqOBrL50ycDelpWvV9kgk72yPevCyKccwMCPbKjBP-SiU4EsGkDr6c2AdxcfRlTdw4kgM4cMKFORucZa0mSfDJaYSxLhyoHw-HFg8/s640/blogger-image--443604943.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; <div>
Hopefully, you've had a chance to look at the homework that was sent home on Friday. Please know that the expectation is that ONE activity (in addition to reading with/to your child for 10mins) will be completed ONLY on school days (Fri, Mon-Thurs). Weekends are for you and your family to spend time together. Now, if you know your kiddo has t-ball practice on Thursday night and you want to complete an activity over the weekend, so your child doesn't have to do homework AND t-ball practice on Thursday night, that is completely up to you. I just want my kindergarten families to know that I respect the weekend for family time. <br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<u>Fall Festival and Class Basket</u></div>
<div>
One of our most exciting PTA events is coming up soon.....The 'Fall Festival' is Friday, September 27th. In addition to jump houses, games, food, and face painting, each class will be auctioning off themed baskets. </div>
<div>
Each class donates items that contribute to the theme, which will then be turned into a basket. Our theme is <strong>"Baby Love"</strong>. Some items to donate might include a onsie, bibs, rattles, a lovey, blankie, a cute picture frame, etc...anything baby. The cuter, the better! The baskets from each class will be available to bid on during the Fall Festival, with all proceeds going to our school:-)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<u>Field Trip </u><br />
Thank you to everyone who has returned the field trip form and money for Naylor Farms. October is a perfect time of year to visit a farm. The owner even said the kiddos might be there in time to see a newborn calf (can we all say a collective...aaawwww!). Please remember that if you would like to chaperone, please make sure you have registered at school online (it can only be completed through our school intranet) ASAP. The volunteer clearance process has taken a bit longer since traditional schools have started, and I would not want you to miss going if you have your heart set on it. </div>
<div>
<u></u><br /></div>
<div>
<u>Spirit Week</u><br />
Spirit Week is next week which means there will be some fun dress up days!<br />
Monday 9/15 Neon Day<br />
Tuesday 9/16 Sports Day (wear your favorite sports team jersey/shirt)<br />
Wednesday 9/17 80's Day <br />
Thursday 9/18 Career Day (dress like what you want to be when you grow up)<br />
Friday 9/19 Spirit Day (wear the Banks Road colors)</div>
<div>
<u></u><br /></div>
<div>
<u>Conferences</u><br />
I will be holding quarter 1 conferences in the middle of October. I will be sending out a link where you can sign up for conference times/dates. </div>

Please feel free to call or email me should you have any questions or concerns. </div><div><br></div><div>Field Trip Forms</div><div>In your child's Daily folder, you will find a field trip form to Naylor Farms. The cost for each child is $16. All children will get a pumpkin to take home. Parents wishing to chaperone this trip must follow the bus or meet us at Naylor Farms. Parents wishing to chaperone MUST be a registered volunteer with Wake county schools. Please note that volunteers must re-register each year. </div><div><br></div><div>Physical Properties Popcorn Party!</div><div>As you know, the kiddos have been working on using physical properties (what an object sounds like, looks like, smells like, tastes like, and feels like) to describe an object. In addition, we have been investigating the different materials objects can be made out of including fabric, metal, plastic, rubber, and wood. Today, we put all of our understanding to the test by......making popcorn in a good old fashion popcorn maker. We observed what the popcorn sounded like, looked like, smelled like, tasted like, and felt like). We also discussed what materials the popcorn maker was made out of (plastic and metal). Here are a few pics....<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhkB5KQRgdKq4xCGH_qJTsJqfHXHgewy28pjEnJ9cnEOU7fpyYktki2Bt68XmM8jDvw58wFqTqg3OY9OHVA6mRdZ4fr67H-TFCaA0HqQ-vbfSM30QAnz2vd8-ScsLym1AseuvtuCg72Nw/s640/blogger-image--1184386659.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhkB5KQRgdKq4xCGH_qJTsJqfHXHgewy28pjEnJ9cnEOU7fpyYktki2Bt68XmM8jDvw58wFqTqg3OY9OHVA6mRdZ4fr67H-TFCaA0HqQ-vbfSM30QAnz2vd8-ScsLym1AseuvtuCg72Nw/s640/blogger-image--1184386659.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhoH934aYh6s7vN1UU_nA1QAntegdNyuNVwgB78EvjV-kTLiPHjpZI4-_5TQ519Dng722CBYJF7QK5Bkq-xIihi-ysgnJTXFVz4MVC3j3xvd9JPvDEnvRH80geknpISvow3u6fXijZYzk/s640/blogger-image-352009334.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhoH934aYh6s7vN1UU_nA1QAntegdNyuNVwgB78EvjV-kTLiPHjpZI4-_5TQ519Dng722CBYJF7QK5Bkq-xIihi-ysgnJTXFVz4MVC3j3xvd9JPvDEnvRH80geknpISvow3u6fXijZYzk/s640/blogger-image-352009334.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBnQe0mSqvNgKgUWchBJPERfMlNS0LRGNnOvmgOiAJVSy_QvErpWcj8hm759vbVektXnsLLZ6iLV782ooOjxyUP0XcuuCTORjIA1lay8PMpSJKXI4DxXHYTwvjKjUcT5HFDXt2U1m_Jhk/s640/blogger-image--226506746.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBnQe0mSqvNgKgUWchBJPERfMlNS0LRGNnOvmgOiAJVSy_QvErpWcj8hm759vbVektXnsLLZ6iLV782ooOjxyUP0XcuuCTORjIA1lay8PMpSJKXI4DxXHYTwvjKjUcT5HFDXt2U1m_Jhk/s640/blogger-image--226506746.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_ym8hm1ZIQxriVuumyaNy8lv_YgjSUiXjhI-BV5r7fjc-FJ0sIG7B4NvQj7O-VdMgSJeKGwKtPea5KWuiWFz-JP2HPgYsoMXCsu4_22av8FBzdWpjS5zgg7IIXBF9BJX9QKI5gLJatr4/s640/blogger-image--1551969696.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_ym8hm1ZIQxriVuumyaNy8lv_YgjSUiXjhI-BV5r7fjc-FJ0sIG7B4NvQj7O-VdMgSJeKGwKtPea5KWuiWFz-JP2HPgYsoMXCsu4_22av8FBzdWpjS5zgg7IIXBF9BJX9QKI5gLJatr4/s640/blogger-image--1551969696.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I hope you all have a good weekend! </div></div>Mrs. McGarryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01567636348079410926noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4191259904538953331.post-42004285908585940172014-08-26T13:48:00.001-07:002014-08-26T18:31:20.099-07:00I can't believe we're already halfway through the quarter....Wow! Time really does fly....We are finishing up our 5th week of kindergarten, with only 4 more weeks left until the end of the first quarter.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The kiddos are really getting the hang of our routines and procedures from coming and sitting on the carpet to walking in the hallway. In fact, we received a compliment today about what a great job we were doing in the hallway!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Now that we have the above under our belts, we are able to dig into our objectives/goals....</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<u>Language Arts</u></div>
<div>
In Letterland, we have just introduced Walter Walrus (w) and Fix-It Max (x) and the sounds each character makes. Ask your child to show you the gesture and sound for these characters. </div>
<div>
Quick side note* You tube has some fun Letterland videos that your kiddos might have fun watching. So, if they want to watch some TV, at least it reinforces what we do here at school:-)</div>
<div>
In reading, we continue to work on:</div>
<div>
-understanding print concepts (front cover, back cover, title page, one-to-one correspondence while reading, starting to read from left to right, top to bottom, and page by page)</div>
<div>
-recognizing the following uppercase/lowercase letters c, m, a, h, d, g, n, o, s, i, p, and t. </div>
<div>
You can support these objectives at home simply by reading a book together. Let your child take the lead. Ask them where you should start reading. When you get to the end of a line, have them tell you where you should go. Finished the page? Ask them where to go next. Ask them to point to a letter that they know and tell you it's name. Want to bump it up? Have them tell you what sound the letter makes. However you do it, make sure it is fun. The more fun they have learning, the better!</div>
<div>
We have also been slowly working on integrating literacy centers (Daily 5), as well. For those of you who are new to Daily 5, it is simply a structure that is created in class so students can be exposed daily to activities that help the kids be better readers. These are:</div>
<div>
-Word work</div>
<div>
Students work with words (right now they are working with their names, later on they will work with sight words) in various ways. For example, the students may write their name with play dough or in a rainbow with markers</div>
<div>
-Listen to reading</div>
<div>
Students listen to a pre-recorded story that is read fluently. Listening to stories being read fluently helps the little guys and girls understand how their reading should sound.</div>
<div>
-Read to self</div>
<div>
Reading daily helps the kiddos work on implementing their reading strategies that we work on in guided reading. At this point in the year, I have only introduced how to 'read the pictures', where students use the pictures from the book to tell the stories. Although looking at the pictures to tell a story sounds easy, it will be a key strategy we will focus on when we begin to read. As students begin to read the words in a book, we encourage them to use the picture to help them see if it matches what they are reading. </div>
<div>
The other Daily 5 centers will be introduced in the next few weeks. They are writing and technology.</div>

<br />
<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<u>Writing</u></div>
<div>
In writing, we are continuing to work on:</div>
<div>
-using a combination of drawing and dictating to relay an idea or thought </div>
<div>
-label our pictures with the first sound (or more) of a word</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<u>Math</u></div>
<div>
In math, we are continuing to work on:</div>
<div>
-identifying numbers 1-10</div>
<div>
-making groups that represent the numbers 1-10</div>
<div>
-using one to one correspondence to count objects up to 10</div>
<div>
-orally counting from 1-10</div>
<div>
NEW this week:</div>
<div>
-comparing groups of numbers 1-10</div>
<div>
We are using the words 'more' and 'less' to compare groups of objects. Ask your child to share with you the gesture for these vocabulary words.</div>
<div>
Want to reinforce this concept at home? Ask your kiddo to make a group of their Barbies (a blond group and brunet group). Have them use one to one correspondence to determine which group is more and which is less. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<u>Science</u></div>
<div>
In science, we are delving into our 'Physical Properties' unit (ask your kiddo to show you the gesture). That is, using an objects' physical properties (what it sounds like, looks like, smells like, feels like, and tastes like) to describe it. Last week, we went on a mini-field trip outside on the recess area and picked an object that fit in a small bag. Students were asked to describe their object using the object's physical properties. Later on in the week, we sorted the objects according to their physical properties. Want to support these objectives at home? Send your little one on a treasure hunt. Ask them to find something interesting (inside or outside). Or, have them help to make their favorite dessert or dinner. Have them describe it using it's physical properties.<br />
On a side note... As a culminating activity, I would like to use one of those old fashion popcorn poppers to make popcorn (the kids will discuss what is sounds like, looks like, smells like, feels like, and lastly tastes like). If you have one that you'd be willing to let me borrow, please email me ASAP :-) </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<u>Homework</u></div>
<div>
Homework is coming soon. Please expect homework in your child's Daily folder next Friday. You will receive a BINGO-like homework form, where your child can choose one activity each night (Mon-Thurs) in addition to reading 10 minutes a night.. Please mark off the activity that your child has chosen to do. You will turn in the BINGO- like homework form the following Friday. The activities that are not completed will be available for your child to complete the following week until a new month comes up. You will receive a new BINGO-like homework form with new activities the following month. <br />
Please know that the homework is intended only as a way to reinforce what we are doing at school. Please let me know if it becomes more than that for your family. </div>

Even though we've only been in school for 8 days, I hope you were able to get a glimpse of what we are doing. <div><br></div><div>Letterland</div><div>By now you've probably heard about Letterland from your little one. If you haven't, let me enlighten you...lol. Letterland is a special place where letters go and become characters. Only kids can go to Letterland. For example, the letter a becomes Annie Apple. The letter b becomes Bouncy Ben. The character's alliterative name and gesture (ask your child what Annie Apple, Bouncy Ben, or Clever Cat say) helps students associate letter/sound correspondence. </div><div>Want to support our goals at home? <span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.292969); -webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); ">Ask your child to share and/or draw a picture of all the Letterland characters they've met so far. Drawing the characters will also help with letter orientation (confusing the letter d for a b, or a p for a q) as well. <span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.296875); -webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); "> Ask your child if there is anyone in your family who's name starts with the same sound as Annie Apple. For example, does your brother Adam have the same beginning sound as Annie Apple? What about your sister Sam? Or have your kiddo tell you some words that start with Annie Apple's sound? Alligator? Aardvark? What about mouse? </span></span></div><div><br></div><div>Literacy </div><div>In reading, we have been using our Poem of the Week/read alouds to work on our print concepts</div><div>-reading top to bottom</div><div>-reading left to right</div><div>-reading page by page</div><div>-pointing to each word as we read (one to one correspondence)</div><div>-identifying the title, front cover, back cover, and title page</div><div>-understanding the roles the author and illustrator play in a book (ask your child to share with you our saying/gesture)</div><div>Want to support these goals at home? It's easy, just pick up your child's favorite book and read with them. Let them take the lead. Ask them where the title is. What does the author/illustrator do? Ask them where you should start reading and where you should go next. For one to one correspondence, you can point to each word as you read, or if it is a familiar book, have them try. </div><div><br></div><div>In writing, we have been working on conveying our thoughts and ideas through a combination of drawing, dictating, and labeling. A good portion of our time this quarter will be spent having the kiddos draw pictures to tell about something. The important part being that they can share (dictate) what is happening in their picture. In addition, we will focus on having the kiddos label parts of their pictures with at least the first sound of what they are labeling. For example, if they are drawing a picture of a trip to the beach, they should be able to write an 'S' next to the sun or a 'T' next to the beach toy. </div><div>Want to support these goals at home? Have your kiddo draw a picture for their favorite grandma/grandpa, friend, or whomever! They can label it as well. Can your child sound out more than just the first sound of a word? Have them write all the sounds of what they are trying to label. </div><div><br></div><div>In Math, we have been working on</div><div>-counting orally to 10</div><div>-identifying numbers 1-10</div><div>-represent numbers with groups/sets</div><div>-using one-to-one correspondence (touch counting) to count groups of objects up to 10</div><div>-understanding that groups that look different can represent the same number. For example, five squares in a horizontal line is the same as five squares stacked vertically. </div><div>Want to support our objectives at home? There are plenty of <span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.292969); -webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); ">'teachable moments' at home. For example, you can ask your child to use one-to-one correspondence to count how many toy cars/babies they have. Ask your kiddo to tell you what one-to-one correspondence is (and have them show you the gesture). At a restaurant? As your little guy or gal to find a specific number and/or have them tell you the names of the numbers they see. The possibilities are endless:-) </span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.292969); -webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); "><br></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.292969); -webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); ">A little blurb about 'Gestures'</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.292969); -webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); ">In our class, I try to associate new concepts and/or sight words with a gesture and visual. </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.292969); -webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); ">Without</span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.292969); -webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); "> getting into the science behind it, 'muscle memory' is important in helping kiddos remember and understand an idea, concept, word, etc.. I don't know about the kids, but boy am I tired! <div><div><br></div><div>Routines and Procedures</div><div>Routines and procedures have been a big part of our class for the past two days (and will continue to be for the next few weeks). How to come in during the morning, how to come/sit on the carpet, lining up, walking in the hallway, going to the bathroom, turning in papers....you name it, we are practicing a way to do it:-)</div><div><br></div><div>Want to know more about your child's day?</div><div>Want to know more about your child's day other than it was 'good' or 'fine'. This tag lets us know how your child is getting home in the afternoon. Please make sure it stays on there until at least the end of August. And as always, please don't hesitate to email me should you need another one:-)</div><div><br></div><div>Snack</div><div>Thank you to everyone who has sent in their child's snack in a clear ziplock bag. We have had a few close calls with some kiddos taking a lunch bag to lunch only to have a small snack in it instead :-/ Also, please remember there should only be one snack in the ziplock bag. </div><div><br></div><div>Kindergarten behavior plan</div><div>Today, I introduced our behavior plan that was in the Meet the Teacher packet. Each student received 3 blocks. If they needed to be reminded several times about a specific rule, a block was taken away. I explained that if all three blocks were taken away, a note would be written in their green Daily folder about which rule they needed to work on. I explained that if they had 4 good days in a week, then they would participate in Fun Friday. Want to support this plan at home? If you can, take a moment to show your child the Daily folder and explain how you will be checking to see that the followed the rules each day. Reinforce that if they do lose all their cubes, it is ok and will just be an opportunity to practice a specific rule. </div><div><br></div><div>Thank You</div><div>Thank you, thank you to everyone who sent in extra glue sticks! They are very much appreciated:-) </div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div></div>Mrs. McGarryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01567636348079410926noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4191259904538953331.post-34835510882170151972014-08-02T21:00:00.000-07:002014-08-02T21:00:47.111-07:00Meet the Teacher!Wow! What a turn out. Can you believe that every single family/student from our class came to Meet the Teacher? A big thank you to each and every one of you for taking time out of your Friday afternoon to come and meet me and see our classroom. I hope you are just as excited as I am to start this new year together.<br />
<br />
From now until the rest of the year, I will be using his blog to share class updates, class happenings, etc... I am always looking for ways to improve and make it more helpful and parent friendly, so please feel free to email me with any suggestions.<br />
<br />
Supplies<br />
I've had a few parents ask about supplies. If you did not bring them in on Friday, don't worry. You are more than welcome to bring them in anytime. Your child will have access to the supplies they need regardless of when you turn them in. Also, if you have not already purchased them, we are not in need of Ziplock bags (we have a ton left over from last year).<br />
<br />
Teacher Wish List<br />
Speaking of supplies, there are a few items that I would love to have for our classroom this year. If you can help, please email me.<br />
-(10) 8quart dish tubs (found at the dollar store)<br />
-glue sticks, glue sticks, and more glue sticks!!!! They are literally like liquid gold in kindergarten...lol!!!<br />
-(1) Birthday Cape<br />
Our classroom theme is superheroes, so if there is anyone crafty out there, I was thinking that maybe we could have a reusable 'Birthday Cape' that the kiddos could wear on their birthday.<br />
-gift cards to Walmart<br />
We would use them for projects and activities throughout the year<br />
<br />
Walking your Child to Class<br />
A few parents asked if it was ok to walk their child to class on the first day. And the answer is a resounding, "Of course!!" It is absolutely expected that you would want to walk your child to class on the first day (even the first week) of school.<br />
<br />
Meet the Teacher Packet<br />
On Friday, you received a packet with lots of information about our classroom. Please return the student information form and the classroom behavior plan back at your earliest convenience. Please feel free to email should you have any questions or concerns about anything in the packet.<br />
<br />
Snack<br />
Each day, our class will have snack. Please send your child's snack in a clear Ziplock bag with their first and last name written on it. Please do not send in your child's snack in a lunch bag, as it is difficult to check each child's lunch bag to determine if it is their real lunch or just a snack. In the past, there have been students who accidentally took their snack to lunch instead of their actual lunch:-/<br />

Boo hoo/Yahoo Breakfast<br />
Our PTA will be hosting a 'Boo Hoo/Yahoo' breakfast for our track 4 Kindergarten parents in the media center from 8:45-9:15 on Monday morning. It is a great opportunity to have some coffee, munch on some donuts and meet some kindergarten parents.<br />

I hope you found these tips helpful. I look forward to a successful year together :-)Mrs. McGarryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01567636348079410926noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4191259904538953331.post-38403739218879612292014-06-09T12:34:00.001-07:002014-06-09T13:06:45.499-07:00The time is quickly approaching....It may be June, but that hasn't stopped us from learning.<div><br></div><div>In reading, we continue to work on our decoding strategies to determine unknown words. These strategies include</div><div>-using the picture for clues</div><div>-sounding out the word and then blending the correct sounds together</div><div>-using sight word mastery</div><div>-using our understanding of vowel teams to decode words (when 2 vowels go a walking, the first one does the talking eg 'bread')</div><div>-using our understanding of short and long vowels to decode words</div><div>-using our understanding of how "y" can change its sound to decode unknown words (eg baby)</div><div>-using our understanding of real and nonsense words to make sure a word makes sense within a sentence </div><div>When listening to your child read, try to let them use the above strategies to decode the word. It may take awhile for one of the strategies to work, but it is important for your kiddo to use them. If your child does not use the strategies independently yet, encourage them to use a strategy, but don't do it for them. In both cases, it is important for these strategies to become part of the automatic tools they can use to decode words. And don't forget basic comprehension and critical thinking skills. Your child is expected to not only understand what they have read, but also think critically about what they have read. </div><div><br></div><div>In writing, we have been working on creating persuasive writing pieces. They have loved working with this type of writing because I told them they could use it with their parents when they want them to do/get something for them. Sorry, but I have to find a way to get the kids excited about writing..lol! Ask your child what is needed to really persuade someone to do something for you (an opinion and 3 facts that support the opinion). Want your child to show off these writing persuasive skills at home? Ask your child to create a persuasive poster of something they want/somewhere they want to go. Tell them if it has an opinion and 3 facts that support the opinion, you will get the item for them. </div><div><br></div><div>In math, we have just begun our unit on measurement. We have been sorting and grouping objects according to attributes including color, shape, and size. This week, we have started to sort objects according to attributes 'longer' and 'shorter'. Want to have your child practice at home? Have them find objects that are longer and shorter than their foot (just make sure when they are measuring, they are measuring from the same start point). Or have your child to sort their toy cars, etc.. at home by color, shape, and size. Or have them sort a group of objects and then YOU have to guess the rule they used for sorting. </div><div><br></div><div>Upcoming Events</div><div>-Tuesday, June 24th/Kindergarten Celebration @12:00</div><div>*PLEASE NOTE: This is a different date than previously stated. Due to other circumstances, the date changed to 6/24.</div><div>More details will be emailed and sent home in your child's Friday folder.</div><div>-Wednesday, June 25th Field Day</div><div><br></div><div>A special thank you....</div><div>A very BIG thank you to my 'Kindergarten Celebration' committee of moms who are working to ensure the kiddos have an extra special day on the 24th. I cannot tell you how thankful I am to have such a supportive group of parents who care so much about our kids:-) </div><div><br></div><div><br></div>Mrs. McGarryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01567636348079410926noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4191259904538953331.post-27977361927185365592014-05-14T18:59:00.001-07:002014-05-14T18:59:58.925-07:00Click, click, click....whee!That's right, we have our hands up and are saying "Whee!" during our last two months of kindergarten!<div>We have been so busy. Take a look below to see what we have been working on. <div><br></div><div>Reading</div><div>Reading/decoding strategies</div><div>-using picture clues</div><div>-sounding out words</div><div>-using our understanding of long and short vowels to decode words such as cake and time</div><div>-using our understanding of diagraphs (sh, ch, th) to decode words</div><div>-using our understanding of vowel teams (when 2 vowels go a walking, the first one does the talking) in words like boat, house, and leaf</div><div><br></div><div>Comprehension strategies</div><div>-re-telling fiction stories (character, setting, problem, and solution) or if there is no problem, re-telling the story in order</div><div>-matching the illustrations/photographs to words in a text</div><div>-making connections (that part of the books reminds me of....) while reading a text</div><div><br></div></div><div>In writing, we have moved onto creating true life stories (narrative writing) all about our fabulous kiddos! This is one of the kids' favorite writing genres, as they get to write and draw stories about themselves. Ask your kiddo what 3 things make an AWESOME true story (actions, feelings, and talking). Then ask your child to share with you their amazing writing skills.</div><div><br></div><div>Math</div><div>We are still working with our addition and subtraction stories, however we have also added representing the stories with equations to our goals. So in addition to drawing/using manipulatives to just solve math problems, students have been representing the problems to represent the math story and solution (4 + 2 = 6). </div><div><br></div><div>Thank You</div><div>-Thank you to everyone who raised money for our Fun Run this year! Our class exceeded our goal of $420 and the best part is that 100% of the profits go to our school.</div><div>-Thank you to all of the parents who came in for our student led conferences. I hope you were able to get a glimpse of what your child mastered during the third quarter and how much they have grown academically in the past few months.</div><div>-Thank you to Michael and Melissa Sommerlad for donating pizza during our make up day on Saturday. The kiddos LOVED it, and it was the cherry on top to our pizza themed day.</div><div>-Last, but not least, thank you for all of the thoughtful teacher appreciation gifts this past week. The cards, flowers, gifts, and kinds words have really warmed my heart! Thank you for entrusting your children to me each and everyday. </div><div><br></div><div>Upcoming Events</div><div>-Letterland is coming to Pullen Park! That's right, Clever Cat, Quarrelsome Queen, and all of your child's favorite Letterland characters will be there THIS SATURDAY, MAY 17th. Students earn individual prizes for their pledges and classes earn group prizes as they make their way towards their class goal (our class goal is $420 or $20 per student). The top 3 earning classes will get to choose from an icecream party, subs and chips from Jersey Mike's, or a pajama/popcorn/movie. Although our early release and subsequent snow day has slowed us down in the curriculum department, we are still chugging along. Below you will find what we are working on (or will be working on) this week.<div><br></div><div>Language Arts</div><div>In reading this week, we have been working on identifying and re-telling the main topic and key details in non-fiction text. The kiddos already know from earlier in the year that we read non-fiction texts to learn about something, as opposed to reading fiction, where we read for fun, to find out about the characters, setting and what problems happen in the story. Today, we re-read a book about koalas (main topic) and learned things such as koalas have two toes and that they eat eucalyptus leaves (details). To support this objective at home, go to the library and let your child check out a book on something they want to know more about (dinosaurs, butterflies, dolphins). Read the book together and talk about the main topic and details. Want to go even further?? Check out an accompanying fiction book, read it, and talk about the differences. For example, you can check out a non-fiction book about dinosaurs and then a fiction book with dinosaurs as the main characters. The kiddos should be able to notice that the fiction book has characters, setting, problem, and solution, whereas the non fiction book gives information about dinosaurs, has a table of contents, and subheadings. </div><div><br></div><div>Sight Words this week: with</div><div>Ask your kiddo about the gesture for this word. At this point in the year, your child should be able to identify at least 25 sight words.</div><div><br></div><div>In writing this week, we are introducing informational writing (to coincide with our reading objectives) . We will be immersing ourselves in tons of non-fiction texts, filling out KWL charts (what we KNOW and what we WANT TO KNOW) before we start reading. Then after we finish reading, we will fill out the 'L' of the KWL chart (what we LEARNED). We will then use the what we learned portion to write class books that inform others about a particular animal. As always, we continue to focus on our conventions, using a capital letter at the beginning of each sentence, spacing, sounding out words, using sight words, end punctuation, etc...</div><div><br></div><div>In math this week, we are finishing up on finding different ways to make a number. For example, 1+4, 2+2, 3+2, 4+1, 5+0 are all ways to make 5. Your child can show you how to do this with this week's math homework. We will be moving on to addition stories later in the week, with the kiddos using pictures, manipulatives, and acting it out to not just share addition stories, but SOLVE them as well. For example, if I shared a story about seeing 3 blue fish and 2 red fish, your kiddo will represent the story with a picture and be able to say/write how many fish there are altogether. </div><div><br></div><div>PTA Fun Run/T-Shirts</div><div>Thank you to everyone who has sent in white t-shirts for our fun run. And an especially big thank you to the parents that donated EXTRA shirts. If you haven't already turned a shirt in, please do so by this Friday. </div><div>And another big thank you to Whitney Tribble, Callie Riggs, Jennifer Norris, and Stacy Kozlowski for signing up to help the kiddos create their tie dye t-shirts for the Fun Run. </div><div><br></div><div>Interims</div><div>Interims will be going home this Friday in your child's Daily folder. </div><div><br></div><div>FYI....Upcoming Homework</div><div>Part of next week's homework (going home this Friday) will be to make a leprechaun trap. Please know that the intention of this project is to work on the kiddos' problem solving skills in a fun way. It is not intended as a project for you (the parent) to do (at least, not all of it). Talk to your kiddo about leprechauns, their size, and what they would be attracted to (gold, maybe??). Don't worry about it being or looking perfect. At the end of the day, the kiddos should be excited and proud of what they have created :-).</div>Mrs. McGarryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01567636348079410926noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4191259904538953331.post-24374208137300471102014-02-26T17:23:00.001-08:002014-02-26T17:23:40.414-08:00It's Wacky Wednesday.....Well, it's not really Wacky Wednesday, but we did read Wacky Wednesday by Dr. Seuss today to help celebrate his birthday this week. If you have a chance, check it out from the library. It is a SUPER SILLY book, and the kiddos loved it!<div><br></div><div>Language Arts</div><div>In reading this week, we are focusing on several strategies to help us read our books including:</div><div>-sight word mastery (the more words you know, the more books you can read)</div><div>-sounding out CVC words (that is 3 letter words with a vowel in the middle)</div><div><br></div><div>We have also been learning about digraphs (although the kiddos don't know that word). That is, two letters that, when combined make a one unique sound, such as 'sh', 'ch', and 'th'. Ask your child to tell you what sound these letters make when combined and have them show you the gestures as well. </div><div><br></div><div>Kindergarten students at Banks Road Elementary are expected to be reading on a level C or above by the end of quarter 3 (the end of March). Ms. Cassidy and I, and the rest of our support team are working hard each day to make sure your child will meet these benchmarks. Please help support your child master this goal by having them read to you each night for 10 minutes. Praise your little one anytime he/she uses the following strategies:</div><div>-sight word mastery</div><div>-sounding out unknown words</div><div>-using the picture to determine unknown words</div><div>-using understanding of digraphs to sound out words (sh, th, ch)</div><div>-flipping the vowel sound when a word doesn't make sense </div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.292969); -webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); "><br></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.292969); -webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); ">Sight Words</span></div><div>Our sight words this week are 'got' and 'have'</div><div>Ask your child for the gestures for these words. If your child can identify all the sight words on his/her homework, please email me and I will send home a new list. As always, you can support sight word mastery at home by encouraging your kiddo to identify sight words whenever they see them. Heck, tell them they can earn a penny for every sight word they can identify. However, let me warn you.....you WILL be out of pennies before you know it!</div><div><br></div><div>Math</div><div>In math this week, are continuing to share math stories. So far, we've learned 3 ways to share math stories including acting it out, drawing a picture, and using manipulatives.</div><div>In addition, we have also been working on determining 'partners' for numbers 1-5. For example, 1 and 4 are partners that make 5, 2 and 3 are partners that make 5, and 4 and 1 are partners that are 5. Getting the kiddos to understand the different ways a number can be made is the basis for addition. </div><div><br></div><div>Field Trip</div><div>Please make sure you have turned in money AND the field trip form for science field trip. Extra forms for students we do not have forms for went home in today's daily folder. Please email me should you have any questions or concerns.</div><div><br></div><div>Early Release Change</div><div>Due to the snow days, March 7th is NOW a full day. </div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.296875); -webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); "><br></span></div><div>Interim<span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.296875); -webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); "> Reports </span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.296875); -webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); ">Interim reports will be going home next Friday. There are lots of family friendly activities like flashlight reading and reading with therapy dogs. If you are looking for an excuse not to cook, our PTA will giving an opportunity to purchase a taco dinner for you and the family starting from 5:30-6:30. The book fair will also be open if you would like to buy books with your child. </div><div><br></div><div>Language Arts</div><div>In reading, our goal this week is to work our sight word mastery which helps with our reading mastery. The kiddos know that the more sight words they know, the more books you can read. In addition, we have also focused on nonsense word mastery. This not only helps kids with letter/sound mastery, but also helps when a child is decoding a word and needs to determine if what they think the word is is an actual word or not (for example, make: a child might decode it and think it is make with a short a and e. That is not a real word, so then the child would have to try the word with a long a, which would make sense). </div><div>In writing, we are finishing up our unit on 'how to' writing. This week, we are writing about how to brush our teeth. The kiddos are expected to know and write the materials they will need, as well as break up the task into small steps. As always, we are still focused on using capital letters the the beginning of each sentence, using mostly lowercase letters, spacing between words, sounding out unknown words using phoneme segmentation, using end punctuation, and using sight words in our writing. To support this objective at home, ask your child to tell you the steps to make cereal or pouring milk. Encourage them to tell what materials they need and use sequence words (first, second, third) to describe the steps in order. </div><div><div style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.296875); -webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); ">New Sight Words: one, day </div><div style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.296875); -webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); ">Older sight words: they, out, little </div><div style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.296875); -webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); ">Ask your child for the gestures for these words. See how many sight words they can find in the real world.</div></div><div>Math</div><div>We have just finished up our mini-unit on positional words (above, below, next to, in front of, behind). The goal with these words was to have students use positional words in relation to other objects. For example, place the cylinder behind the chair, where is the cube, etc..</div><div>Today, we started a BIG unit on 'Math Stories' which help the students see how math (adding and subtracting) is found in everyday life. For example, I there are 2 boys in my family and 2 girls. So altogether there are 4 people in my family. Through sharing stories, our class realized that in order to have a good math story, you need numbers. So, just sharing a story that you ate pizza doesn't make a good math story, but sharing that you had 2 slices of pizza and your Dad ate 4 slices makes a great math story. Then, we can find out how many slices of pizza you and your Dad ate together. The goal of these early lessons is to introduce the kiddos to adding with real life scenarios. For now, we will be using only pictures to share our math stories and add (not equations: 2 + 4 = 6). To support this objective at home, see if you can come up with some math stories at home (dinner is always a good time for math stories). </div><div><br></div><div>Donations Needed:</div><div>Next week will be Dr. Suess' birthday. In short, 'I read, you read' is just what it sounds like. Two people take turns reading the pages of a book. If the partner reading gets 'stuck', the partner listening makes suggestions on how to figure out unknown words. The two partners together will then try said suggestions. Some suggestions might include:</div><div>-sounding out unknown words</div><div>-looking at the picture to see what the unknown word could be</div><div>-trying to flip the vowel sound (for example, sounding out 'make' with a short a sound would not make sense when sounding it out, but flipping the vowel sound to the long a sound would make sense)</div><div>If the partner reading doesn't get stuck, the partner listening can give a compliment or ask how they figured out a word that is not a sight word (for example, listener: "How did you figure out that word was 'woman', I didn't even hear you sound it out. Reader: "Well, I saw the word started with the letters "wom" and then I looked at the picture and saw a woman, so that makes sense.") Listener: "You did a great job using the first few letters of the word and the picture to figure out that word."</div><div>By talking and listening to each other, the two readers get to think and talk about the strategies they use to decode words. Just by that exchange of ideas, the two readers get to think/talk about the strategies they use and solidify these strategies as lifelong reading tools. 'I read, you read' would be great to use at home, too. Just make sure that you, the parent reader models getting 'stuck', so your child can make suggestions. </div><div><br></div><div>Sight Words this week: little, out (the join 'they' from last week)</div><div>Ask your child for the gestures for these words</div><div><br></div><div>Writing</div><div>We are continuing our unit on 'how to' writing. Today the kiddos wrote their first 'how to' on how to make microwave popcorn. In addition to the usual writing components (sounding out words, spacing between words, using sight words, end punctuation, etc...), we are also focusing on using sequence words to begin each step, creating illustrations to match each step, and writing at least 3 step directions. And in an effort to make school on Saturday a little more fun, <span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.296875); -webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); ">we will be making/writing how to make a bird feeder:0)</span></div><div><br></div><div>Math </div><div>In math, we continue our unit on 2d and 3d shapes. This week, our focus has been creating large 2d shapes using smaller 2d shapes. For example, through some hands on activities, the kiddos discovered that 6 triangles can be put together to create a hexagon. </div><div><br></div><div>Thank you</div><div>Thank you to all the parents who have donated snacks to our school. </div><div>Thank you to Stacy <span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.296875); -webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); ">Kozlowski for donating peanut butter, spray cheese, and candy hearts for our upcoming activities.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.296875); -webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); ">Thank to our very first 'Mystery Reader', Sheila Tribble.
