What a big week!

Book Buddies
Today with our book buddies, we made 'Reindeer Chow'. The kiddos loved it and cannot wait to put it out with Santa's cookies. Please check in your child's bag, as it is going home today.

Winter Celebration is this Thursday!
Students may come to school in their pj's as part of our special day. During our math block, we will be having two centers
-pattern center where we will be making necklaces with bells a la Polar Express
-2D and 3D shape sort using the food goodies (Graham crackers, jolly ranchers, cheese its, etc...)
In the afternoon, we will be listening to The Polar Express while having some hot chocolate with marshmellows and candy canes.

Thank you to everyone who has sent in items and/or volunteered for this event.

Track Out
As you know, track out is Thursday (and it is a long one).
-As with all track outs, Friday folders will not go home. Instead, all papers will be stapled and put in your child's back pack. This includes your child's first report card. Please sign and return the envelope upon returning from track out. Please feel free to email or call should you have any questions about your child's report card.
-Your child's sight word books for this quarter, will also be going home on Thursday. Take some time over the long break (or long car/plane ride if you are traveling over the holidays) to have your child read them to you. Not only is it good reading practice and reinforcement of sight words, you will also get to see the growth they are making as readers.
-Rest towels will be going home and NOT coming back when we track back in.
-Speaking of coming back, we will be in a DIFFERENT room when we come back. However, it is just next door in room 218. Don't worry, I will be outside in the hallway making sure the kiddos are going to the correct room.

On a personal note,  for the holidays, my husband and I will be traveling to south Florida (first 12 hour car ride with a 3 year old and 7 month old...yikes!) to see our families and do some much needed relaxing, eating, and just hanging out. I hope this holiday season finds you happy, safe, and surrounded by the ones you love.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

What's going on in room 220?

21st Century Learning in the classroom
This week started our new i-touch station during the Daily 5. In this station, students practice their sight words by looking at a sight word and predicting what it might be. Then, after making their prediction, they use the QR scanner on the i-touch to scan the QR code which connects them to fun learning video that tells them what the sight word says. Ask your child what they liked best about our new Daily 5 station.

Interim reports
Interim reports will be going home to any student who is NOT meeting quarter 2 benchmarks in reading, math, or writing this Friday. Please feel free to call and/or email should you have any questions. If your child does not have an interim in their Friday folder, this means your child is performing on grade level for each subject area.

This and that...

Social Studies
As part of our social studies curriculum, we have been talking talking about 'then' and 'now'. Using the story, 'Celebrating Thanksgiving' by Joel Kupperstien, we talked about the many ways we are similar to the pilgrims in that we are thankful for our freedom and people who help us. We also talked about how we are different from the pilgrims in how we dress, the toys we play with, and how we make/cook our food. We discussed how the Pilgrims could not just pick up a turkey and some mashed potatoes at Walmart. Instead, they had to grow/make everything that they ate. To culminate the discussion, we made butter out of heavy whipping cream,  that we then spread on Saltine crackers. The kiddos LOVED this, especially when they got to shake (and shake and shake...and shake some more) their plastic containers of cream and watch it turn into butter. Try giving it a try at home (You Tube has tons of videos) as the butter is surprisingly good. Even if you don't like butter, it is a fun activity for the kids to do while you are trying to get Thanksgiving dinner together. lol.

No Friday folders on Wednesday
As with track outs and other long weekends, Friday folders will not go home tomorrow. Instead, we will staple their take home work and place it in the kids' backpacks.

Homework
Just in case you didn't get the note, there will be NO HOMEWORK this week. New homework will go home next Friday, November 30th to be returned December 7th.

Mystery Readers
Be on the lookout for the 'Mystery Readers' sign up on www.signupgenius.com coming soon. This is where a parent, grandparent, uncle/aunt may sign up to read to our class. The kids won't know who it is until that person comes into read. I will give hints throughout the week for the kids to guess who the mystery person is.

Winter Celebration
Be on the look out for our 'Winter Celebration' sign up form on www.signupgenius.com. I will be asking for donations of hot chocolate, candy canes, volunteers, and other goodies for our 12/20 celebration.

Our bag of tricks!!

The kiddos have been learning and using soooo many tricks to learn how to read. They include...
-understanding our sight words and using the gestures
-looking at the picture when we don't understand a word
-looking at the first letter/sound of the word we don't know
-using sentence segmentation (counting the number of words in a sentence) to help us read a sentence.
For example, if the sentence says, "I like to jump" and by using the picture and first letter sounds, I think the sentence says, 'I like to jump high', I can use the number of words in the sentence to (4), to determine that, "I like to jump high" with  5 words could not be it.

Ask your child about these strategies. I told them how impressed you would be with them saying, 'sentence segmentation' (which happens to be our strategy of the week), so make sure to make a HUGE deal when they say/explain it.

Remember, it is important that when reading to your child at home, parents model both fluent reading (reading smoothly and with expression) and reading by modeling the above strategies.

In addition to our 'how to read' strategies, we have also  been focusing on our comprehension strategies that include:
-making predictions about what the story will be about BEFORE we read (I wonder who the characters, setting, will be...)
-making connections while we read (That reminds me of...)
-identifying the character
-identifying the setting
-identifying the main idea

In math, we are working on counting with 5-groups (or fast 5s) and counting with 10-groups (or fast 10s). For example, instead of counting to 12 by 1's, we would say 10 (and put up 10 fingers), 11, 12.

OOOOO  (The 2 rows are a fast 10)
                                                                      OOOOO
                                                                      OO

Or if we wanted to count to 9, we would start with 5 (and put up 5 fingers), 6, 7, 8, 9.

                                                                      OOOOO (fast 5)
                                                                      OOOO

We also have been working on understanding, identifying, and writing numbers in the teens. We have talked about how each number in the teens has a 1 before it, including those sneaky 11 and 12 numbers (even though they don't have the word 'teen' in it).

We are learning more and more everyday!

Our focus in reading this week is being able to identify the characters (WHO the story is about), setting (WHERE the story happens), and main idea (WHAT happens in the story).
In  "Fundations' our phonics program, we continue to focus on letter identification/letter sounds/letter formation. This week, our letters were 'v' and 'w'.
In writing, we are continuing to focus on using a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to convey our thoughts and events. Many of the kiddos are beginning to use our sight words, as well as beginning & ending sounds to create one or more sentences about their drawings. Speaking of sight words, we have added the words 'we' and 'will' to our list. Ask your child to share with you the gestures for these words.
In math, our focus has been using a '5 group' to count numbers AND represent them visually, as well as on our hands. For example, if we were going to count to 8, we would put our '5 group' up (5 fingers on one hand) and count, "5, 6, 7, 8" and put 3 fingers up on our other hand. We would represent 8 with the  '5 group' and 3 fingers with a picture such as:

                                                                     O O O O O  (5 group)
                                                                     O O O          (3 fingers)

We also started to work on writing and representing numbers 11-20.

All of these objectives are easy to tie in at home in those 'teachable moments' when the kids don't even know they are learning.

Thank you to those of you who donated money for our JRDF run on Thursday. Although I was absent, I heard the kiddos had a fun time helping to raise money for children with diabetes.

What a day!

And another week down. I can't believe how quickly this week went.

I usually don't post a day after I have already done so, but I wanted to share something so GREAT that the kids 'taught' me today.
We were reading over new our sight word book, "Bedtime". Each page started with the words, "This is my...". Of course the kiddos knew the first three words because we have been working on them all week, but when it got to the last word, they 'taught me' an excellent reading strategy. First, in order to figure out the last word on the page, we looked at the picture. For example, one of the pictures could have been a sheet, a quilt, or a blanket. Then, we looked at the first letter of the word. The first letter of the word was a b. We thought about which word started with the 'b' sound....sheet? quilt? blanket? Finally, we agreed that the sentence must be, "This is my blanket." We then used this strategy to read the entire book and agreed that using the picture, as well as the first letter of the word we don't know, definitely helps us when we are reading a book. Try modeling this at home when you read and encourage your child to do the same. They will be so surprised and excited about how much they can read!

Book Buddies and the Library
We did not go last Friday as a result of the field trip, but the kiddos were able to check out books today at the library. We also met with our book buddies from Ms. Stover's class and were able to read outside without sweating. Ask your child about the interview they did with their book buddies today!

Snack
I wanted to let you know that we were sooo busy, we did not get to snack today! I apologize for any, "Mom! I'm starving!!" comments you will receive today.

Homework
New homework went home in your child's Friday folder. It is due next Friday, November 9th!

Tuesday, November 6th
Don't forget! There is a 2-hour delay due to the election on Tuesday. School will start at 10:45am.

Pumpkin Day and the rest of the week!

What a fun day! Thank you to everyone who volunteered and/or donated items to make today so much fun! Through our learning experience today, we were able to:
-refine our fine motor skills and create paper candy corns
-learn about the life cycle sequence of pumpkins and create flip books
-practice our one-to-one correspondence and play candy corn math games
-practice our positional words and emergent reading skills and create a spider book using our fingerprints
-enjoy listening to the book, "Go Away, Monster" by Robert Embry and created our own 'cupcake monsters'!

What are we learning this week?
In reading this week, our focus is on making connections as we read. That is when what you are reading about, reminds you of something you have done and/or read about. In class, we have practiced this by saying, "That reminds me of..."
Our letters of the week are "Pp" and "Jj". Our sight word this week is "my". This will be added to our other sight words including, "I", "me", "see", "a", "are", "the", "this", and "is". You can reinforce these concepts by having a contest with your child to see how many sight words/letters they can identify at home.
In math, we are focusing on the concept of one more and one less. For example, "We have 2 cubes. How can we make 3? That's right, we can add one more." You can reinforce this at home using Halloween candy and say, "I have 3 pieces of candy, but I want 4. How many more pieces of candy do I need to get 4?"

Thank you again for all of your help this week with Pumpkin Day. Be on the lookout for NEW homework in your child's Friday folder.

Updates and changes....

Friday folders...TODAY!
Due to tomorrow's field trip, students will bring their Friday folders home today. In it, you will find a classroom directory form. Simply fill it out and return by Friday, November 2nd. On that same note, I am looking for a parent who would be willing to compile the directory information into a handy-dandy sheet . Please email me if you are interested.

Field Trip
Send a bagged lunch (paper or plastic, no lunchboxes please) with your child to school tomorrow, unless you ordered a bagged lunch from the cafeteria. Make sure the has your child's name on it. Also, make sure to send your child in shoes that are comfortable, as we will be doing a fair amount of walking. This applies to chaperones, too. Don't forget a lunch and comfortable shoes for you, too!

*No backpacks tomorrow.

*A BIG thank you to Ms. Sosa and Ms. Hood for lending us their coolers to store our lunches in.

'Specials' Schedule
Our specials schedule has changed. Make sure to take a gander on the lower right hand side of this blog to check what special we have each day. No longer do we have a specific special on specific day. Instead, we now have a 6-day rotation. The * indicates what special we have on Monday, so you will know what we have for the rest of the week. Please email me should you have any questions.

Lots of Stuff this Week....

What are we learning this week?
In reading this week, we are focusing on asking who, what, where, why, and how as we listen to books being read aloud. Asking questions is very important, as it is the key for comprehension. Parents, you can reinforce these concepts when you read aloud to your child at home. Talk to your child and model asking before and as you read, such as, "I wonder what will happen to the little boy on the cover?" or "Who hid the apples?"
In 'Fundations', our phonics program, the focus is on the letters/sounds for "Ll", "Hh", and "Kk". Try playing a game with your child to identify as many "Hh"s (or H sounds) that you see on TV, in printed texts, etc..., to help practice letter identification/sound skills.
In writing, we are continuing to focus on writing conventions (beginning each sentence with a capital letter, spaces between word, and end punctuation), as well as drawing moments that reflect a memory/special time that include details and labeling.
In math, we continue to work on our understanding of numbers 1-10. We will also focus on numbers patterns with numbers 1-10, as well as identifying and extending shape patterns.
Sight words of the week: "is" and "this"
The above words are added to the following words "see", "me", "the", "a", "I", "are", "is"
As you know, your child needs to know at least 10-15 sights words by the end of the year. You can help your child at home by asking them the gestures (and encouraging the use of these gestures) for these words and finding and identifying these words in your daily life (on TV, recipes, holiday/birthday cards, etc..)

Where are we going this week?
Our field trip to Smith's Nursery is this Friday, 10/26!
Here are a few reminders...
-Dress weather appropriate and wear tennis shoes (we will be walking around outside)
-If your child is bringing a lunch from home, please send it in a DISPOSABLE BAG and WRITE YOUR CHILD'S NAME ON THE BAG and DRINK. We will not have room to carry lunch boxes.
-We will be leaving Banks Road around 9:30 and plan to arrive at Smith's Nursery around 10am. If you are chaperoning, you can follow the bus, or meet us there. Please bring a bagged lunch for yourself, if you would like to eat a lunch with us.
-Mrs. McGarry will have a sign out sheet at Smith's Nursery, should you wish to take your child straight home from field trip (instead of returning to school at 1:30).
- Please do not send your child with a backpack on Friday.
*We need 2 coolers with wheels to place our lunches in* Please email me should you want to lend one (or 2) to our class for the day.

The PTA Fall Festival
The Fall festival is this Friday from 5:30-8:30. There will be bounce houses, crafts, and snacks. Take advantage of this beautiful weather and come on out to support our school (and have fun in the process!)

Homework
Hooray! Or at least that's what the kids say...
The kiddos are sooo excited to get their first homework assignment. Normally, the homework will go home on Friday and be due the following Friday. However, I got overly excited myself and sent it home in the Kid Connection folder (I don't know what I was thinking...).
That being said, no matter what the dates on the homework say, it is due Friday, November 2nd.
Please email should you have any questions.

"Special" changes
Our "specials" have changed to a 6 day rotation. This means that we will rotate the following specials every 6 days, instead of having a specific special on a specific day.
Technology (1)
PE (2)
PE (3)
Art (4)
Music (5)
Curriculum Focus (6)

Our schedule this week is Tech, PE, PE, Art, Music

Conferences
Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedules to meet with me last Thursday and Friday. I will be sending home a copy of what I shared in your child's Friday folder.

Track out!

This 9 weeks has flown by...

I have been finishing up the kiddos end of quarter assessments to compare to our initial assessment data, and it amazing how much they can grow in just a few weeks. Speaking of data, I will be sharing with your child's data with you during our conferences October 18th and 19th. If you haven't signed up yet, head on over to www.signupgenius.com and look over the available dates/times. If for some reason, you cannot meet on those dates, please email me, so we can work out another time.

Also, since the kids are tracking out, Friday folders and Kid Connection envelopes will not be going home. With the little guys and gals, we have found it is harder to get the folders back after 3 weeks. Instead, any papers and forms will be stapled and placed in your child's backpack.

Also, in your child's backpack, you can find their sight word books that we have worked on all quarter. In them, you will find stories using the sight words I, a, my, the, and see. With the combination of using the strategy of  illustrations and beginning letters/sounds to determine words, as well as using the sight words themselves, the kids will amaze you with how the can 'read'.

A big thank you to you and your children for a wonderful first 9 weeks. Enjoy your track out and I will see you back October 22nd:-)

Fall Festival Class Basket-donations needed

The Fall Festival is just around the corner. There will be fun things for the whole family to do, including bidding on 'themed baskets' that will help raise money for our grade level. This year, we have decided to pair up with Ms. Little, a track 2 kindergarten teacher. Students from each class will donate items that go with our theme, that can later be bid on during the Fall Festival. The proceeds will go towards helping students who cannot afford to pay for field trips such as, our trip to Smith's Nursery.

The theme we have chosen is  “Warm Your Sweet Little Soul". Some examples of items people can donate include: gourmet hot cocoa, specialty chocolates, hot cocoa mugs, chocolate spoons, fun marshmallows, and other items of that nature.

If you would like to help, but do not have the time to shop, you can make a monetary donation (please label with a note that says 'PTA Basket' ) and send it in with your child.

The last day to donate is this Friday, September 28th.

Apples Galore!

What a fantastic day! There were apples galore...apple sauce, apple graphs, apple art, apple patterns, red apples, yellow apples, green apples. I almost felt like Bubba from Forest Gump, lol. A great day was had by all. Besides getting to taste the apple sauce, the kids LOVED getting a turn to try the apple peeler/corer.
A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who donated apples.

In case you are interested, here is the recipe for the applesauce we made today. They taste great warm with vanilla icecream or cold, as a side dish.

1/2 cup water
1/2 tsp cinnamon
3/4 cup sugar
10 large apples, peeled, cut, and cored

Cover and cook on high for 3-4 hours or low for 8-10 hours. Take a potato masher and mash. This can be eaten warm or cold. Refrigerate the remaining sauce.
*Note* I made a batch and a half  that was perfect for our class of 23.

What else did we do this week?
We learned about the letters "Dd" and "Ff", the sounds they make and how to write them. In writing, we continued to practice writing sentences with a focus on using two fingers to make a space between each word, as well as, creating pictures with labels that represented the kiddos favorite part in the book, "Ellen's Apple Tree".
In reading, our focus was on making predictions about a story before we start to read, as well as a continued focus on print concepts such as, understanding punctuation marks (period, question marks, and exclamation point), where the title page is, what the author/illustrator do, left-to-right/top-to-bottom reading, etc....
In math, we began to use 5 groups with the numbers 6-10. For example, we counted the number 7 on our hands. We then, were able to see that seven is the same value as 5 and 2. This is a very important concept, as being able to see and use 5 groups gives children a trememdous advantage when they move into addition and subtraction.
As always, these concepts can easily be reinforced at home through 'teachable moments'.

Conferences
Keep an eye out for an email with details on how you can sign up for quarter 1 conferences.

Wishlist
Thank you to Ms. Hughes for finding and donating the elusive 8quart dishpans (they were so rare, it was almost like seeing Big Foot), as well as cookie sheets for our classroom.
Thank you to eveyone who donated 'kid-friendly' magazines to use at our Word Work station.
Thank you to our wonderful volunteers, Ms. Walters, Ms. Moose, Ms.Davis, and Ms. Salpeck for making copies, stuffing folders, making min-books, and tearing out math pages every week.  You are very much appreciated by both Ms. Gardner and myself.

Week 7

Hi everyone! Can you believe the first quarter is almost over? By now, the kids know our classroom procedures and routines, and we are making strides towards identifying all of our letters/sounds, print concepts, and understanding of numbers 1-10. Keep an eye out for an email with a link to www.signupgenius.com to sign up for a conference day/time over track out, so I may share your child's growth this quarter with you.

Fun Friday
Our first "Fun Friday" is here! Our first theme for fun Friday is apples. We will be sorting apples, tasting apples, making patterns with apples, graphing our favorite kind of apples, reading apple stories, and making apple sauce. And this is where you come in. I am asking for donations of (drum roll, please), you guessed it, APPLES!! Red, green, or yellow...either kind is fine. One apple, a couple of apples, or a bag of apples. Whatever you can donate would be greatly appreciated : -)

Homework
Homework will begin when we come back from track out. It will go home in your child's Friday folder and will need to come back the following Friday. This way, homework will not have to be completed on a specific night, giving families more flexibility for extra curricular activities, etc...

Field Trip
Thank you to those of you who filled out and returned the permission forms/money for our field trip. Don't forget to fill out the back of the permission form with emergency contacts, etc.. Thank you for those of you who have volunteered to go on our trip with us. If you haven't already, please make sure to sign up to be a volunteer in the front office. This is very important as you must receive clearance from Wake county in order to go on our trip.

Picture Re-Take Day
Picture re-take day is next week (9/25). If you are planning to have your child's picture taken again, or if you missed the first picture day, please email me and I will send you an order form in your child's "Kid Connection" envelope.

*Don't Forget* The last day to order scholastic books is September 28th : -)

Tuesday, September 11, 2012

Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to the computer lab we go!

We made or first trip to the computer lab today. With the help of Mrs. O' Grady, the technology teacher, we learned how to log onto the computer using our NC wise numbers, which is no small feat considering most of these numbers are at least 6-digits long! Tomorrow, we will go to the computer lab again and learn how to go to www.starfall.com. Here, the kiddos can practice their letters, sounds, and beginning reading skills. Click on the link to check it out...it's FREE!

In other classroom news, our reading stamina is now up to 6 minutes and 45 seconds (can I get a woot! woot!). We are making a lot of progress towards our daily 5 structure this week. The kiddos have continued to explore the activities in our word work and writing stations and are doing a great job! And big thank you to Mrs. Zajac and Mrs. Maslow for making our "Mystery Sight Word & Mystery Classmate" bottles for our writing station.

In reading this week, our focus is on making connections while we read. This means, being able to relate what we are reading to something we have done (text-to-text connection), something else we have read (text to text connection), or something we know (text-to-world connection). In class today, we tried to encourage these connections after reading our poem of the week by saying, "This reminds me of..." You can help reinforce this when you are reading at home and model for them these connections.

In math, we continue to work on our understanding of numbers 1-10, as well as graphing these numbers to be able to demonstrate and explain more, less, or equal. "Teachable moments" for number sense are all over the place at home, for example, "Do we have more girls in our family or more boys?", "Count the chocolate chips in this bowl." And the best part is, the kids don't even realize they are learning!!!

Thank you all for participating in our 'Spirit Week' this week. The kids have had so much fun dressing up! Also, thank you for donating your loose change to support students in kindergarten who may not be able to go on our field trips.

*Special Note*
Be on the look out for field trip information going home in this week's Friday folder.

**Donations Needed**
Kid-friendly magazines and/or catalogs that the students can use to cut out& paste pictures and words are needed for our Word Work station.

Reading sight word books, a book picnic, and using all of our 5 senses!

What a great day!
Using the sight words 'I' and 'see', as well as the reading strategy of using the illustrations to help us understand the text, we were able to read our first sight word books! The look on all the kiddos faces was one of accomplishment and joy. Don't worry though, these books will be coming home to you soon, so your child can read them at home to you.
Using the information gathered from our 'interviews' last week, our 4th grade book buddies checked out a book or two that they thought our little ones might like. We then headed outside with our towels for a 'book picnic' where the older kids read to our little ones.

Lastly, we ended our day by using all of our 5 senses to make popcorn the old fashioned way, using a popcorn popper (courtesy of the most fantastic teacher assistant at Banks Road, Melanie Gardner). The kids got to see, hear, and smell the popcorn being made. However, the best part hands down for everyone was getting to touch and taste the popcorn. Ask your child about the 5 senses we have been singing this week.

Wednesday, September 5, 2012

It's already Thursday??

Okay, so it's technically Wednesday night, but still...where has the week gone?

Today, the kiddos were introduced to another part of our Daily 5 literacy structure...WORD WORK! As you know, one of the many ways we become better readers is to read every day (as evidenced by our daily reading stamina practice) and work with words. In kindergarten, working with with words looks more like working with letters and sounds, but will progress into working with words later in the year. For now, students will work with words in several ways, including, but not limited to...
-matching letters (uppercase and lowercase)
-matching pictures with beginning letter sounds
-using play dough and wikki sticks to create and form letters (uppercase and lowercase)

The kids had a super fun time learning and trying out these new ways to become better readers. Ask your child what their favorite word work activity was. Over the next few weeks, we will continue to slowly roll out our daily 5 structure (read to self, word work, writing, listen to reading, guided reading), so that students can independently work on their own during our literacy block. Stay tuned for volunteer opportunities to monitor and work with these groups.

Volunteers
Thank you to Mrs.Salpeck, Mrs. Davis, Mrs.Moose, and Mrs.Walters for volunteering for our weekly jobs. Ms. Gardner, our class assistant, will be holding a short orientation meeting Wednesday morning (9/12) @ 9:15 to share with you some important information. If anyone is still interested, we still have 2 jobs available (morning work person and copies/laminating person)

Reminders
Don't forget! The deadline to order scholastic books is September 28th!
Check out our new "September Reminders" in the right hand corner of our blog. Next week is Spirit week and there are some 'fun days' where the kids can dress up, etc...

What were we up to this week?

Language Arts
In language arts, we continued our focus of print concepts (top to bottom/left to right directionality, front cover, back cover, title page, author, illustrator, identifying letters vs words) as well as introduced the concept of 'return sweep' (when you finish reading a line in book/poem and return back to the next line). In addition, we continued our focus on rhyming words and introduced making predictions about what the text will be about using the cover art, and using the pictures inside the book to help us understand and clarify what we are reading about. Look out for teach-able moments (moments that are apart of your normal day) that you can help reinforce these concepts with your child at home.

In phonics/writing, we were introduced to the letter Aa and Cc. We practiced how to write these letters, as well as what sounds they made. We also learned how every sentence starts with a capital letter, that there are spaces between words in a sentence, and that each sentence has an end mark. Ask your child what an exclamation mark (!)  and question mark (?) sounds/looks like.

We also introduced our very first sight words (I, a) that students should be able to read and identify by sight. Sight words are important, as these words are found in 99% of printed text. To help practice our sight words, we will be creating easy to read books that contain these words each week. Students will then put these books in their 'good-fit' bags that we use during read-the-pictures (read to self) time (see below for more info). Encourage your child to see if they can point out any of our sight words in catalogs, magazines, and/or TV commercials.

As a part of incorporating our Daily 5 structure, our students were introduced to the concept of reading STAMINA this week. We learned that in order to become better readers, we need to build our stamina. Using our previously agreed upon 'read the pictures' rules, our class increased their reading stamina from 45 seconds on Monday, to 4mins and 3 seconds today! That is quite an accomplishment, as it takes a lot of concentration for 23 kindergartners to do this all at the same time. If you have a chance, ask your child what they are most proud of themselves for doing during our 'read the prictures' practice this week.

Math
In math, we are continuing our understanding of numbers 1-10,  concepts of less/more/equal, and how groups of numbers are the same even if they are arranged in different ways (4 dots in a line is equal to 4 dots arranged in a square). Ask your child about the 'Count to 100' song we learned this week.

Science
In science, we introduced our 'properties' unit which includes our five senses. Students learned about our 5 senses and how they help us. Our focus this week was our sense of touch and hearing. We will continue to focus on our senses throughout the next few weeks.

Books Buddies

On Friday, we met our 4th grade book buddies from Ms. Stover's class. Our students got to meet their 'buddy' and were able to practice and reinforce our 'Read the pictures' lesson from earlier in the week. Book buddies are mutually beneficial to each group of students, as the older kids get to teach/reinforce their understanding of reading, while the little ones get to practice emerging reading skills. All that, AND the little ones get to forge a friendship with an older student who they normally would not have the chance to encounter during the day.

Starting the Daily 5, Going to the library, Fire Drills, and Lunch with Your Child!

Going to the Library
Today was our first day going to the school library. We meet our librarian, Ms. McCool and learned how to check out books. Students will take the book they checked out home over the weekend.

*We still need a donation of 2 gallon ziplock bags to tote our library books to and from school.

Starting the Daily 5
Today was our first day starting the Daily 5. For those of you who don't know, the Daily 5 is a structure that allows teachers to incorporate balanced literacy, which includes the following everyday:
-Read to self  (reading the pictures, reading the words, or re-telling the story)
-Read to others
-Listen to reading
-Word work
-Writing
The kiddos learned what 'read the pictures' looks like. We also created an anchor chart that helps explain what it looks like. The kids decided that when we 'Read the pictures', we should...
1.  Sit criss cross apple sauce
2. Eyes are down and looking at the pictures
3. Our voice is smaller than a whisper explaining what we see in the pictures.

We had some great modeling of  what 'Read to Self'  looks like from Ada, Hutton, Bella, and Will. Ask your child to show you what it looks like.

We will continue to gradually incorporate the elements of Daily 5 for the rest of this quarter.

Fire Drills
Our track 4 kindergartners had their first fire drill today and they did SPECTACULAR!! We talked about how although there was not a real fire, it is important to practice what we would do if one ever happened. We also talked about why the alarm is SO LOUD, how to line up QUICKLY and QUIETLY, and how follow our emergency EXIT ROUTE.

Lunch with Your Child
YAY! The first two weeks are over, so you can now start having lunch with your child. Many parents have asked if this is ok, and my answer is always YES. However, before having lunch with your child, ask yourself the following questions...
-Does my child seem to have adjusted to coming to school? Or does he/she still have some anxiety about school?
-Would my coming to school and then leaving help or hurt the rest of the day for my child?

If your child is taking a bit longer to warm up to school, it might not be in their best interest to have lunch just yet. Give him/her a bit more time to get used to our routines and procedures before you decide to have lunch with your little gal or guy. At the end of the day, you know your child best and what is in his/her best interest.

What are the kids up to this week?

Well, I'm glad you asked!

For literacy, our students are focusing on environmental print. That is, print/writing that the kids can recognize just by looking at it ("Walmart", "Crocs", "Fruit Loops"). Thank you to everyone who sent in examples to share. We are continuing with our print concepts including parts of a book (front cover, back cover, title page, reading left to right from the top of the page down) and rhyming words. At home you can look for 'teachable moments' with any of the above concepts. For example, when you are going to Target, ask if your child can read the sign (environmental print). When you are reading a story together, hold the book upside down or start at the last page and see if they correct you (print concepts). Play the 'name game' song at home, to review rhyming words.

In "Fundations" (our phonics program), we have added the letters "Mm" and "Nn" (in addition to "Ff", "Bb", "Tt"). We have been practicing not only what sound these letters make, but also how to write these letters.  In writing, we have continued to practice drawing pictures to represent a story. Students have been encouraged to add details to their drawings that help make it easier for others to understand what our story is about. Lastly, we have been learning about how to label our pictures with consonant sounds (for example, if a student drew a house, they would sound out the word and write the sounds they hear "H,S")

In math, we continue to work on our understanding of numbers. In addition, we have introduced graphing this week. We have have analyzed our graphs by asking  questions such as "Which has more?" or "Which has less?" Ask your child about the "M&M" graphing activity we did!

Your child and environmental print!

Next week, we will be introducing "environmental print". That is, letters, symbols, words or pictures in the environment that have meaning (for example, a stop sign "stop", golden arches mean McDonalds, the Target sign = Target) to our kids. Talk with your child about how even though they may not know all their letters/sounds, they already know how to read. If you have a chance, take a few moments with your child to help cut out/print some examples of environmental print that your child already knows to bring in on Monday.

We will also be introducing rhyming and rhyming words to help with our understanding of words and phonics. In writing, we are continuing to learn how to communicate our ideas through pictures and labeling them with consonant sounds. The first week of Kindergarten is almost over!

As I sit here on this Thursday night, I can't believe that tomorrow is Friday, making this first week of Kindergarten almost over! I hope that you, the parents have gotten most of your questions answered about the ins and outs of Kindergarten (pick ups, drop offs, snack, lunch accounts, etc...) and you feel a bit more comfortable about your kiddos heading off to 'big school'. I also ask that this Friday be the last day that you walk your child all the way down to class (however watching as they walk all the way down wouldn't be cheating...lol), so they can have the opportunity to gain self-confidence about knowing how to get around at their new school. Please know, you are more than welcome to email and/or call with any questions or concerns you still may have.

Many of you have already generously offered to volunteer in the classroom this year. I welcome every bit of help I can get, however I like to wait until the kids have a good hold on classroom routines, etc.. before I have parents come in to volunteer. In the meantime, I do have a few things that can be taken home to complete. Just email me to let me know if you are interested. And on the same line, I want you to know that I will be having our "Mystery Readers" this year. This will take place later in the year when rest time is phased out and a "Mystery Reader" (a surprise parent) comes in to read to our class. So, stay tuned for more information...

Again, thank you for all of your questions, emails, and offers of help/donations this week. I look forward to a great year together.

Our second day!

Hi everyone!

Our second day has come and gone. The students are learning the ins and out of 'how to be in school' including: what to do during arrival, how to line up and walk to the hallway, using the bathroom in school, proper noise levels, and class rules. If your child hasn't already told you, here are our class rules:
1. Listen when the teacher is talking
2. Follow directions quickly
3.  Raise your hand to speak
4. Keep your hands, feet, and objects to yourself
5. Be safe, be kind, be honest

Snack Reminder
Please make sure your child's snack is labeled and in separate zip lock bag (not in their lunch bag). We have had some students accidentally eat their snack during lunch and/or accidentally eat their snack as their lunch, instead of their actual lunch.

Kid Connection Envelope
Please make sure you are reviewing and returning your child's envelope each day. The green student information forms are being sent home again for you to fill out asap.

Wish List
2 gallon plastic bags (24),  24 pairs of ear buds for use of I-PODS, etc.. (can be purchased at the dollar store), scented markers, magnetic tape, (24) *8quart dish pan/racks for under chair storage (can be purchased at the dollar store), wikki sticks, pipe cleaners, 24 single subject notebooks, and extra snacks for those days when a student forgets to bring one.
*Must be an 8quart dish pan/rack, as they are the only ones that will fit securely under student chairs.

What a great first day!

What a fantastic first day! I'm sure our kiddos are going to be tired tonight (I know I am), as there was so much we did today. Some of the highlights include touring the school and meeting our specialists, including our art, music, and technology teachers . We also read a story about Marty the Monster and how he learned our class rules (ask your child what his/her favorite one is and the hand motions for the rules). Lastly, we got to explore our developmental centers including blocks, housekeeping, and puzzles.
.
The only bad part of the day was the darn copier :-(  Due to a copier mishap which has made the green student information cards unreadable, I will be sending home the GREEN STUDENT LOCATOR CARDS to be filled out AGAIN. Please fill these out asap as this is the ONLY means I have to get a hold of a parent in case of a student emergency. Thank you so much for your understanding with this matter.

Some friendly reminders...
Make sure to check your child's backpack and "Kid Communication" envelope tonight. Please make sure to place any money, transportation changes, notes, etc.. in it for me to see tomorrow morning.

Please make sure to send in a labeled snack with your child's name on it each day.

Please feel free to email or call should you have any other questions or concerns. I look forward to a wonderful year together.

Meet The Teacher and more...

Meet the Teacher
WOW! What a great turn out today for Meet the Teacher. It was so great to meet my students and their families. I am looking forward to seeing those smiling faces on Monday morning. Don't forget to put the special glitter you received from today under your pillow on Sunday night to help with those 'night before school' jitters.

Afternoon transportation
During staggered entry, parents filled out a form indicating how their child would be getting home in the afternoon. Please make sure to initial the 'afternoon transportation chart' confirming how your child will get home in Mrs. McGarry's room Monday morning.
*If you are planning on picking up your child via car pool, please make sure you have a number tag. If you do not, please contact the office.

Staggered Entry & Meet the Teacher!

I have been so excited getting everything ready for the new school year. I cannot wait to meet you and start off this very special year together!
Staggered Entry for Rising Kindergarten Students/Track 4 begins July 30th-August 1st. You should have already received your date/time that your child is scheduled to arrive. If you are not sure when you are scheduled to arrive for staggered entry, please call Banks Road Elementary school at (919) 890-7333. Remember, your child will not need a backpack or lunch/snack, as they will only be at school for part of the day.
Meet the Teacher for Rising Kindergarten Students/Track 4 will be held August 3rd from 2:30-4:30 p.m. Feel free to bring any school supplies that day to help your child decrease the amount of 'stuff' they will need to bring on the first day of school.
